An historic landmark
The Fisherman’s Cottage in Hermanus is a preserved historical site and the town’s oldest seafood restaurant. Built in the late 1800’s, it was originally a fisherman’s home that belonged to the Hamman family.
The building was first converted into a restaurant in 1991 and since then this little gem has become the heart of Hermanus’ historic centre and the cullinary home of the freshest locally sourced seafood.
Meet the Chef
Michael Broughton has been widely acclaimed as one of South Africa’s top chefs. His previous restaurant, Terroir in Stellenbosch, pioneered fine dining in the Winelands and was consistently named among South Africa’s Eat Out Top 10 over the 14 years it delighted customers. He recently moved to Hermanus and took over the reigns at Fisherman’s Cottage, where his aim is to continue to live out his motto of “simple things done well” and his dedication to using locally sourced ingredients and innovative cooking techniques.
Building on legacy
Michael took over from Anton Verhoogt who, together with his wife Nicole, turned Fisherman’s Cottage into one of the most loved destinations among Hermanus locals and tourists alike.
Anton loved to explore his passion for cooking and tasting with local ingredients and foraging in the ocean to create the interesting and delicious flavour combinations you can still find on our menu today.
